The Chrysler Building is an Art Deco skyscraper the late 1920s by William Van Alen and finished in 1930. This 71-story building is one of New York’s most impressive landmarks. The Chrysler Building was constructed between 1928 and 1930 in the Art Deco style, and for the first few months of its existence was the tallest building in the world (before being overtaken by the Empire State Building).
The Chrysler Building is one of New York’s most iconic and beloved skyscrapers. Standing at 319 m (1,047 ft), it is the world’s tallest brick building, and considered by many architects and tall building enthusiasts, to be the finest skyscraper in the world. The building is constructed of masonry, with a steel frame, and metal cladding. The corners of the 61st floor are graced with eagles, replicas of the 1929 Chrysler hood ornaments. On the 31st floor, the corner ornamentation are replicas of the 1929 Chrysler radiator caps. The building was intended to house the Chrysler Corporation, and although it is no longer owned or used by Chrysler, the distinctive ornamentation of the building is based on features of Chrysler automobiles at the time.
The Chrysler Building is a classic example of Art Deco architecture and considered by many contemporary architects to be one of the finest buildings in New York City. With its graceful, arcing spire, glowering gargoyles and intricate detailing, this Art Deco masterpiece is one of the most beloved and photographed icons of New York.
When it was completed, the Chrysler Building was the tallest building in the world – until the Empire State Building opened its doors just eleven months later. In 2007, it was ranked ninth on the List of America’s Favorite Architecture by the American Institute of Architects. The building is now third tallest building in New York City and is tied with the New York Times building, which is exactly the same height.
When the Chrysler Building first opened, there was a public viewing gallery on the 71st floor. This viewing area was closed to the public in 1945. Unlike New York City’s other iconic skyscrapers, you can’t go up to the top of the Chrysler Building. However, you can visit the lobby area. If you like the Art Deco style a visit to the lobby of the Chrysler Building is a must. The stunning lobby is clad in different marbles, onyx and amber, and features a lot of interesting detailing.
