Each band is led by a King and Queen, who wear extremely large costumes that often require wheels and extensions.

Bands are what make the Trinidad Carnival so special. Most people refer to the bands as Mas Bands, which is short for Masquerader Bands. Each band has its own theme and colors for the Carnival. Anybody can join a band but you must decide which band that you wish to join early since the popular bands tend to sellout their spots quite quickly. Carnival Bands

Carnival bands are organized into groups of participants, often known as sections. Each band is led by a King and Queen, who wear extremely large costumes that often require wheels and extensions. Every year, on Carnival Sunday, a competition is held to determine the King and Queen of Carnival.

Band Costumes

Many band leaders and costume designers begin working on their band’s costume several months before the Carnival to showcase their costumes. Many bands will hold a launch party to show off their costumes several months in advance.

Playing Mas with A Band

If you want to play with a specific band during the Trinidad Carnival, then you are playing Mas. If you plan to play mas, make sure to book early. If you are planning on playing Mas, then you need to decide quickly on which band you will be playing with. You should choose a band at least 6 months in advance since the popular bands fill up very quickly. Costumes for many of the popular bands are also quite expensive.
